Wotan — I started out with this exercise doing my count at the completion of the exhale. After my time of being able to maintain attention became very good, I practiced NOT counting in my mind and instead just allowed my awareness to KNOW what number I was on. Problem is that I’d reach, say, 35, and then get distracted and couldn’t recall where I left off. I switched to a sheet of checkboxes that I check off with each breath. You can download that sheet at Dynamic Mental Fitness website.
By using the checksheet, I keep all my attention on two experiences; 1) the experience of the breathing itself – of the inflow and the out and the nature of ANY influence trying to steal my attention away (especially Thoughts, which I simply observe like passing clouds, refusing to participate in them); and 2) the experience of reaching with pencil to check off the most recent completed breath. If I concentrate for the whole breath, I put a check. If not, I mark down an ‘X’.
I have very rarely made it to 100 complete breaths without at least a few ‘X’s. By counting the number of Checkmarks vs ‘X’ marks for every 100 breaths, I can determine a percentage. I can usually do 93 to 97% pure concentration in 100 breaths (2 to 3 breaths per minute). That means that, in an hour, I can pretty much maintain single-pointed concentration 93 to 97% of the time. That’s better than 99% of people on the planet. You can reach that level with practice.
Starting out, it does kick one in the rear end. BUT, there will come a moment of realization wherein you figure out what’s getting in your way and, with resolve, push yourself further than your usual roadblock. The first time you consciously push beyond your current limit, you’ll know that nothing can stop you from going even further. When THAT realization begins to sink in, a whole new world of possibility should dawn on you.
words of wisdom!

Jojo – Thanks for the note (which I accidentally deleted thanks to YouTube’s insane idea of putting the Reply link right next to the Remove link. I’ll tell you that the most amazing, life-changing experience I’ve had in Mental Fitness Training came through Breathing Concentration training. I remember the day I discovered that I couldn’t do 3 breaths without distraction. I immediately set my goal for 7, and when I reached it a day later, my whole perspective transformed.
I have trainees write me all the time to tell me that the breathing concentration exercise(s) are easy for them, and I know immediately that they didn’t follow directions well. There is nothing at all easy about keeping one’s full conscious attention in the present moment through the course of consecutive full, deep, relaxed breaths – the mind simply wants to wander and talk to itself, having no interest in staying totally on task.
When a person finally sees the truth of that – when they are finally conscious enough of the habit of their disobedient mind during the technique, then they can resolve to apply their will to staying in the “Here And Now”. When a person can do 5 or 7 breaths in the present moment in utter defiance of all self-talk and mental wandering, that’s when possibilities begin to present themselves for future progress.
As for Depression, I sincerely sympathize and empathize. The GREAT news is that without negative, circular Thought and negative physiological states combining to cause self-suffering, there is no Depression for a human being. This type of mental training takes one out of such patterns, and reveals that there is no necessity for you or anybody else to continue to suffer Depression when the choice of Mental Self-Rule is always at hand. Control thought and body and you can eradicate Depression.
I am a positive person .however its not always easy .
This advise he gives is really good . i am going to apply it !

There is a deeper consentration that aibel you to control your human thoughts, not many dont even know that this i possible. Your thoughts are only noice that prevent you to gain contact with your intuision. Train on holding all your thought away you have to be in the moment all day long. You should only do not think of doing.
Indeed, Drilldrulus. The ability to quiet the churning waters of the mind and bring them to stillness is an advanced skill that places a person in touch with not only their deepest but most powerful scale of intellect – a level that does not need to constantly talk to itself to know what’s going on. At our highest level of intelligence, all our senses and knowledge and perceptions are integrated into one powerful sense – “INTUITIVE” (but far beyond what we ‘Think’ about intuition).

@DynamicMentalFitness Does this show still come on? I’m definitely going to tune in if it does. I’m having such a hard time keeping my mind on my schoolwork. I find that when I’m in the library, 1- 2 -3 hours have passed with only 20 minutes of work done.
@SkywalkersOrigin – I’m changing the format so I can upload the shows in small “Mental Fitness Minutes” simulcast in Audio and Video. The live shows have been too much of a challenge to my schedule over the past few months. I’ll make sure new shows are announced. Meanwhile, check out the show archives where you’ll find at least a few things useful. If you have any questions, email me.
@SkywalkersOrigin – Oh, one other thing. You’ll find that breathing concentration is a powerful technique for dealing with all forms of anxiety. It’s even being used in Cognitive Behavior Therapy by people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in order to begin detaching themselves from overwhelming physical impulses and persistently bothersome thoughts. Get good at this technique, and you’ll be able to feel comfortable in any situation.
sounds very hard ill try
